work in ribbing for 8 row, on row 12 inc 2 sts evenly spaced

k for 2 1/2" more-even
shaping top of mittens:k4, k 2 tog
next row:purl even
next row:k3, k2 tog
next row:purl

thumb section: on 10 sts knit 10 rows

thumb-using 10 center sts, knit for 10 rows, k2 tog across, fasten off

for string to be threaded through sleeves of jacket: using 2 strands of
yarn, make a crochet chain of 4 hand lengths long. fasten on side onto
each side of mitten.
