Rainsticks

Supplies: 1 24" mailing tube
               1/2 lb. 1 3/4" nails
3/4 cup. Sunflower seeds in shells
               1/4 C. Rice
Contact paper or colored electrical tape

Have the children hammer the nails into the tube at random, but as evenly as possible up and down the length of the tube. Pour in the rice and seeds, capping the end of the tube and taping it shut.
Cover the outside of the tube with contact paper or tape to keep the nails from popping out. When you tilt the tube, it makes a sound like rain on the windows. It's quite lovely, and even the 5 year olds can accomplish the task with supervision.
